Chief of Army LTGEN Rick Burr has removed 2 Squadron, Special Air Service Regiment from the Army's Order of Battle following the release of the IGADF inquiry into war crimes committed in Afghanistan. 2 Squadron arrived in Vietnam in February 1968 to replace 1 Squadron. It conducted its first patrol on 5 March and by the end of month had completed 29 patrols. Up until that time the SAS had primarily concentrated on carrying out reconnaissance and surveillance patrols.

Based out of the 1st Australian Task Force base at Nui Dat, Phuoc Tuy Province, they conducted clandestine reconnaissance and offensive operations against the North Vietnamese Army and Viet Cong.
